With faith in Christ and hope in the Resurrection, we share the news of the repose of the Rev. Dr George Koshy. Fr George fell asleep in the Lord on January 1, following a long battle with ALS.
Fr George received a Master of Theology from St Vladimir’s Seminary in 1983, and a Doctor of Ministry in 2002. His parish, St George Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in Portchester, NY, was a spiritual home for many Malankara seminarians during their studies at SVOTS, among whom he was beloved. Many Malankara seminarians often went to his house, only a walking distance from the seminary, to learn from him. He spoke often of his fondness for Frs Schmemann and Meyendorff, saying they turned everything he thought he had known about Orthodoxy upside down.
The Church Council of the Orthodox Church of Finland elected Metropolitan Elia (M.Div. ‘03) as primate during a vote held in the main church of Valamo Monastery on November 28.
Following his election, Metropolitan Elia traveled to Constantinople on Friday, November 29, to participate in the feast day of St Andrew the First-Called at the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The Holy Synod of the Patriarchate convened on Sunday, December 1, to canonically select and confirm the Archbishop-elect. The newly elected Archbishop began his duties immediately and returned to Finland late the next evening.
The official enthronement ceremony took place at Uspenski Cathedral, Helsinki on December 15, 2024, during the Divine Liturgy.
This election marks a new chapter for the Finnish Orthodox Church as Metropolitan Elia assumes the role of Archbishop, bringing with him a wealth of experience in education, pastoral care, and theological scholarship.
Several faculty members at St Vladimir’s Seminary have fond memories of either teaching or studying with Metropolitan Elia, then Matti Walgren, during his days at St Vladimir’s Seminary. “He was a much-loved student,” said Professor of Systematic Theology, Dr Peter Bouteneff. “All who knew him at seminary are delighted to hear of his enthronement; we wish him good strength and will be praying for him in his new role.”
After graduating from St Vladimir’s Seminary, Metropolitan Elia returned as the 2015 Commencement speaker (listen to his Commencement address here). Metropolitan Elia has noted that his "best years and most challenging years" were when he studied at St Vladimir's. He credited the influence of three seminary Deans—Protopresbyter Alexander Schmemann, Protopresbyter Thomas Hopko, and Archpriest John Behr—as being key in his formation as an Orthodox priest.
Metropolitan Elia is one of over 50 Orthodox hierarchs whom St Vladimir’s Seminary counts among its alumni. Among the hierarchs are one patriarch, archbishops, bishops, and several metropolitans.
About Metropolitan Elia:
Archbishop Elia was born on December 8, 1961, in Kajaani, Finland. His educational journey began at Stockholm University, where he studied Swedish and Czech languages from 1982 to 1984. He also served as a Swedish language immersion teacher in Helsinki from 1993 to 1996 and again from 1999 to 2001. Between 1997 and 1999, he taught Orthodox religion in Uusimaa.
His journey in the Orthodox Church began in 1994. He was ordained a deacon on May 29, 2003, and a priest on September 1, 2003. DECEMBER: SVS Press has released a new extraordinary book, Journal of Joy, on ebook and in hardcover. The author, Nicu Steinhardt, known in his later monastic years as Father Nicolae de la Rohia, was born in 1912 near Bucharest to Jewish parents. A refined scholar who had established himself as one of the most erudite voices of his generation, he was imprisoned by the repressive communist regime in 1960. Steinhardt asked to be baptized in his cell—“illicitly”—and eventually found profound joy amid the suffering and despair of the prison. After an extraordinary experience of Christ, the intense happiness accompanying him perpetually transfigured the cruel and gloomy surroundings into a luminous world permeated by God’s love and grace—which is why writing the Journal in the early 1970s was essential, even in the knowledge it would be banned by the communists.
DECEMBER: Interim President and Academic Dean, Dr Ionuț-Alexandru Tudorie, expressed his profound gratitude to all who support and pray for St Vladimir’s Seminary: “Marveling anew at the profound mystery of the Incarnation, we thank you for your commitment to the proclamation of this glorious Gospel to a world desperately in need of the good news. St Nicholas (played by an unnamed seminarian) even made a surprise visit, delighting the children with the story of St Nicholas. Upon his departure, the children returned to their shoes to find them filled with special goodies.
Seminary families were also very grateful to receive several generous deliveries of Christmas presents from nearby parishes, organized by the Fellowship of Orthodox Christians in America (FOCA).
Thank you to all who joined us at the Metropolitan Philip Auditorium for this wonderful tradition. We look forward to continuing this celebration in the years to come!

Fall 2024 St Vladimir’s Seminary Board of Trustees meeting in progress
Finally, Dr Frank Cerra stepped off the board after completing twelve years of service—the maximum of four terms allowed in the bylaws—and Dr Nicholas Pandilidis was honored with trustee emeritus status, following his retirement from the board earlier this year. Both of these longtime trustees have earned the hearty thanks and deep respect of their fellow trustees.
At the same meeting, the Rt Rev. Archimandrite Jeremy (Davis) was reelected as executive chair of the board and Dr Ana Iltis and Fr Mihai Faur were reelected as Corporate Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. The board received reports on the work of the seminary and discussed the leadership transition and search process now underway.
Archimandrite Jeremy observed,
Even in the midst of this transition, the seminary continues to fulfill its essential role of preparing Orthodox Christians for service to Christ and His Church. This is largely due to the faithful and tireless work of Academic Dean and Interim President Dr Ionuț-Alexandru Tudorie and all the faculty and staff. Alongside their dedication, the strength of our board gives me great confidence in the future of the seminary. Under His Beatitude’s chairmanship, we have a distinguished group of trustees with a breadth of skills and life experiences and a deep, shared commitment to the seminary’s Christ-centered, student-focused, and education-driven mission. Their love for St Vladimir’s was especially clear on the first day of our meetings, as we sat down for a roundtable discussion with the faculty about the seminary’s future and then engaged with students in small-group Q&A. Each trustee was visibly energized by this opportunity to reconnect with the heart of the seminary, the reason we are all serving on the board.
All St Vladimir’s Seminary alumni are invited by the Alumni Board to attend a virtual town hall meeting on December 7th at 2:00 p.m. Eastern (11:00 a.m. Pacific). The purpose of this event is:
For alumni to learn more about what is happening at the seminary from the Academic Dean and Interim President, Dr Alex Tudorie. There will be an opportunity to send in questions ahead of time (see below), as well as to submit questions live;
To discuss the upcoming Alumni Board elections, and to begin the process of nominations;
To discuss alumni initiatives for reunions and other events, ways to strengthen the relationship between St Vladimir’s Seminary and its alumni, and offer ideas for upcoming events like the All-American Council Reunion with the new Director of Alumni Relations, Zach Mandell;
To reconnect, albeit via Zoom, with old friends and classmates.
For those attending, questions may be submitted on the registration form. If you cannot attend, you may still submit questions via email at alumni@svots.edu; the Town Hall will be recorded so that you can view it at a later date.
If you are interested in attending, please RSVP here:
We hope to see you there, and we hope that this event is a catalyst for an active and thriving relationship between our alumni, alumni board, and the seminary. Even if you cannot attend, do not hesitate to reach out, about this event and in general. We want to hear from you, growing together in communion, in community, and in our common mission of serving Christ and his Church.
