Start Date
The history of St. Vladimir's Seminary is not the story of a mighty institution with a large endowment and imposing buildings. (For decades, the seminary had none at all!) Rather, it is the story of dedicated faculty assembled from the far corners of the earth and of loyal alumni whose ministry has taken them to the far corners of the earth. It is the story of selfless workers and of dedicated supporters. It is the story of all those whom the seminary has reached with its publications and programs.
In the course of fifty years, the seminary has come a long way. This past, however, must be seen as a foundation for the future. With God's help, the coming half-century will see many new students and new teachers worthy of their predecessors and equally devoted to serving the Lord and His Church at St. Vladimir's Seminary.
— Protopresbyter John Meyendorff, dean of St. Vladimir's, 1984–1992, A Legacy of Excellence, 1938–1988 (SVS Press)
These prophetic words were written by Protopresbyter John Meyendorff on the occasion of the Golden Anniversary of the seminary in 1988. As we now enter St. Vladimir's Seminary's Diamond Jubilee Year, we invite our friends and alumni to celebrate and connect with us, as we continue to create a legacy worthy of our heritage.
Our 75th Anniversary Year will feature two major events serving as "bookends" for a full year: The 30th Annual Father Alexander Schmemann Memorial Lecture, with Dr. Peter Brown, Friday, January 18, 2013, and a gala 75th Anniversary Benefit Banquet, Thursday, November 7, 2013, at the Glen Island Harbour Club, New Rochelle, New York . We invite you to all our Diamond Jubilee events, which will be posted throughout this celebratory year on our Website.
Follow the links to photos and memories, upcoming events, fun Facebook contests, and contributions to Synaxis blog by former professors (beginning with Fr. Georges Florovsky). We look forward to celebrating with our seminary family in 2013! (Our thanks to David Lucs for his watercolor rendering of the St. Vladimir's Seminary Campus.)
